Shalom
Court’s occupancy hit 100% during April, a particularly busy time for the care
giving and support staff. It is a timely reminder for interested parties,
whether considering short or long-term stay, to contact Office Administrator,
Suzanne Abel, and express an early interest.
Penny Smith has been appointed registered nurse and brings over 20 years
experience in aged care in the
UK
and
New Zealand
. Penny is a local St Heliers resident, has most currently
been employed at
St Andrews
Retirement
Village
and will be working part-time at
Shalom Court
in a predominantly clinical capacity.
The anniversary of the passing of
Shalom Court
benefactor, Raye Freedman, was commemorated during the
Stiebel sabbath service on 1 May. Sarah Katz, a trustee of the Raye Freedman
Trust, read passages from Raye’s memoirs which alluded to the birth of
Shalom Court
and Charlene Beinart-Smollen thanked the trustees for their
efforts in continuing to deliver Raye’s vision through her legacy.
The generosity of brick donors in honour of the golden wedding anniversary
of Shalom Court President Margot Hart and her husband, Andrie, has enabled the
purchase of new curtains for the upper lounge which will be installed this
month. Recent significant brick donations in honour of celebrations of Harold
& Estelle Goldwater, Olly Newland and Vera Krukziener, will be assigned to
the upgrade of lounge coffee tables. Brick donations are a personal way of
acknowledging a special occasion and fulfilling the mitzvah of tzdekah
(charity). Recipients of “bricks” receive a certificate naming the donor(s),
and donors receive a receipt for tax purposes. Brick donations are tagged for
specific projects and we welcome discussion for any perceived area of need you
may identify. Bricks can be ordered through the office or committee member merlenewland@ihug.co.nz
On 12 May
Shalom Court
residents will be viewing the Anne Frank exhibition at the
Greys Avenue
synagogue. For
our Jewish residents this will be a first visit to the upgraded Auckland Hebrew
Congregation community complex and
Kadimah
College
and for our non-Jewish residents an opportunity to learn
more Judaism. One week later Kadimah
students return the visit for Shavuot !
